Short Abstract
While building a PMO within an organization can certainly be a meaningful undertaking, without a clear raison d’etre, the likelihood of long-term success is often unbearably low. To begin with, the ‘P’ in PMO can assume 1 of 3 forms – Project, Program, Portfolio and, without explicit definition of the charter and end state, a continual re-invention of the function before the proverbial dust settles can prevail. Not surprisingly, without the appropriate level of sponsorship and despite the best of intentions, success becomes short-lived. What is needed, is a careful assessment of the organization’s PMO needs in the context of its cultural predispositions, before putting in place the first building blocks for PMO success.
